Ko ténei te wiki mo t[...]August 1987, Maori was declared in a court of
law to be an official language of New Zealand. This week is
about celebrating that language, the foundation language of
our nation. It’s not all[...], and
celebration. It’s about presenting te reo to the nation in a
way that everyone can participate in some small way at
least. It’s about learning to try new things — and
remembering, as Huia so aptly said last week, that apples
aren’t the only fruit. There’s a world of different tastes[...]ntinent, and every
nation, te reo Maori is unique to us. It’s how we identify
ourselves as a nation.

As sure as we call ourselves Kiwi, as sure as the All
Blacks perform the Haka before a test match, as sure as the
kumara goes well with a Sunday roast, it’s time to celebrate
the language that gives our nation it’s distinction. It’s time
to celebrate the language that gives us our names.

Maori was widely spoken up until the 18703, by
priests, missionaries, and politicians, who often grew up in
Maori communities. It was from the 1880s that Maori was
expressly forbidden, and discouraged by punishment. Later,

I guess most people have heard the results of the
Royal Commission on Genetic Modification. Like most
people, I’m disgusted that the Commission is ignoring the
majority of the 1 1,000 people that made a public
submission. 92 percent of them were against release of
genetic engineered organisms into the environment. That’s a
really strong message from the people of this country. But
the commission didn’t listen to the people. Instead they
listened to the vested interests who said that genetic
engineering is essential to our economic future.

Pro—GE people always say that releasing genetically
engineered organisms into the environment will make us
money. It’s hard to see how, when our main export
industries are dairy, meat and tourism. People don’t want to
eat GE food, as the Commission recognised — especially not
meat or milk. That’s why there is so much resistance to
labelling it. Tourists come to New Zealand to check out our
beautiful land. Being GE—Free is[...]’m talking about
keeping genetic engineering in the lab. Being GE—Free
doesn’t stop medical research going ahead, or the
production of drugs like genetically engineered i[...]kind of research is going on in New Zealand
now. The Royal Commission misrepresented that point in
their report, although it was clearly explained to them.

Being GE—Free is like being nuclear—fr[...]we
don’t build nuclear power stations all over the country.

What we don’t have, and have never ha[...]w, and
that’s something we all can be proud of. The danger we face
right now is that this Labour—Alliance Government might
agree with the Commission that we shouldn’t stay GE—Free.

The Commission is promoting their report as a
middle line. It’s not. They give the go—ahead for release of
genetically engineered organisms into the environment and
that’s an extreme recommendatio[...]ties as they claim — it commits us 100
per cent to a genetically engineered future. The Commission
base their recommendations on the belief that we can have
GE—zones and GE—Free zones. They ignored all the overseas
evidence that this doesn’t work.

Some of the other recommendations from the
report were:

— Buffer zones to prevent contamination, for example of
around 200 metres (Bees fly up to 5kms);

— Terminator—style seeds (which only grow once and then
render the plant sterile) should be used here — despite being
rejected nearly everywhere else in the world;

— No changes to the genetically engineered food labelling
regime despite its huge holes;

— New Zealanders should bear the cost if GE proves harmful
in the long—term — no changes are suggested to current
liability rules which exempt biotech comp[...]kunu whakanuaki

wasn’t until the 1980s that Maori leaders began to initiate
programmes that helped nurture te reo Maori, and
encourage its growth.

Not so long ago was the Kohanga Reo movement
established, the Maori Language Commission (Te Taura
Whiri i te re[...]asting Funding Agency) among others.
Soon we’re to see the launch of a new Maori Television
Network.

The recent success of television programmes
such as PLZkarza, and the Maori pop—group Aarl'a— who’s
debut single Kez'a Wal'ra re Kupu has just gone platinum,
all testify to the growing enthusiasm for te reo Maori,
which is sure to strengthen in the future.

What for? Well, many of you may wonder. It’s
simple. Maori language is unique to this nation. It
defines our culture, gives names to the things we treasure,
and is the backbone of our heritage. It is a national
identi[...]g our
knowledge of te reo may be, we can remember the past,
live in the present, and shape the future. If all you can say
is “Kiaora” — th[...]you won’t be greeted this way anywhere else in the
world.

He ika kai ake I raro, he rapaki ake I ra[...]cally engineered crops should go ahead
so long as the Minister for the Environment agrees to the
first commercial release — despite recognised risks to the
soil and environment.

I don’t reject technolog[...]fits for our society, some offer harm. It’s up to us to
decide which we want to be part of our future.

There needs to be some way to think beyond
dollar signs. The kind of things we can do now — like
creating em[...]tural or spiritual questions — we’re too
used to thinking only about the money.

The report from the Commission suggests setting
up a Bioethics Council tothe public is involved, and the council
actually has some influence over the final outcome. At
least it sets up a place to discuss these issues.

Every decade, a new techno[...]and fossil fuels — we have done
plenty of harm to our environment already without
releasing GE orga[...]are out, there’s
no getting them back. That’s the really scary thing. The
decision to release genetically engineered organisms into
the environment is forever.

There’s lots of anger in the country right now. I’m
angry too. The most important thing is to make sure
Government hears our voices. The next step is up to the
Government, and while they will listen to the Commission’s
report, they will also consider the public mood. This is a
set—back for an Econation, but it’s not the end.

There are lots of ways toto get your council
declare your region a GE—Free[...]in putting pressure on biotechnology companies.

The Government will make its public response on
Slst[...]be letting them know that this is a
key issue for the Green Party. The people of Aotearoa /
New Zealand must also[...]

The Tertiary Education Advisory Commission
(TEAC) released its third report, Shaping the Strategy, last
Tuesday. Student associations have commended the
direction of the report, in particular the acknowledgment
that a greater emphasis on providi[...]tertiary education is required from
government.

The New Zealand University Students’ Association
(NZUSA) is calling on the government to strengthen the
desirability test as proposed by TEAC, so that resources
can be shifted to improve quality and access to public
education.

“The TEAC report is mostly good news for
students,”[...]at tuition fees
will rise by 50—70 percent.”

The Victoria University of Wellington Students
Associ[...]many Maori and Pacific students
never go forward to tertiary study. Indeed many finish
secondary school with no formal qualification whatsoever,
making the prospect of any further study a very distant
one,” VUWSA President Chris Hipkins commented.

“The Commission’s recognition of the value of
bridging courses, improved course advice[...]t
and community education is a tremendous step in the
right direction,” Mr. Hipkins said.

Shaping the Strategy outlines the key areas of
national strategic direction, and identifies specific goals for
the tertiary sector. At the launch of the report, Tertiary
Education Minister Steve Maharey said difficult choices
had to be made about the courses needed to achieve the
nation New Zealand wanted.

“In deciding what our requirements for tertiary
education are, we need to think about our needs, not only
as a knowledge na[...]r kind of
knowledge nation,” Mr Maharey said at the time of the
launch.

The entire tertiary system needs to be better aligned
with wider government goals for economic and social

development rather than continue to exist as an isolated
entity, Maharey said.

The strategy aims to achieve this alignment as well
as setting out a “scorecard” to evaluate the contribution of
the tertiary education system. It also outlines how the
desirability of programmes is assessed.

This ‘[...]associations — “We do have some concerns that the
commission is still reluctant to prioritise public tertiary
institutions over private education providers. This could
lead to problems when the TEAC comes to implement the
proposed desirability test,” commented Andrew Campbell.

“There is much more that TEAC could do to redirect
funding away from wasteful or duplicated[...]bell. “Then maybe
their members wouldn’t need to threaten New Zealand
students with huge fee increases. TEAC has provided a
useful blueprint for the knowledge society. However if
access to tertiary education is limited through higher fees[...]ell.

TEAC chairman Russell Marshall said Shaping the
Strategy— which follows Shaping a Shared Vision and
Shaping the System — provides a way of implementing a
more planned approach to tertiary education. TEAC has
identified five national strategic goals the tertiary education
system should contribute to and be measured against:
innovation, economic development, environmental
sustainability and fulfilling the obligations of the Treaty of
Waitangi.

In order to achieve these goals, the tertiary strategy

priorities should be to:

- Build the quality of learning while maintaining high
partic[...]retaining top students in New Zealand.

- Develop the competencies, attributes and environment
for a kn[...]coming Local Elections

“Go surfing and get on the roll” is the message the
Electoral Enrolment Centre (EEC) is taking out to students
during the lead up to this year’s local council and district
health b[...]al Manager Murray Wicks said that
introduction of the new online enrolment services earlier
this year m[...]d easier for students and
other eligible electors to enrol to vote in the elections.

“Enrolling online at the elections website
www.elections.org.nz takes only a couple of minutes to do.
Electors who are already enrolled can also check and
update their enrolment details at the site.”

A comprehensive campaign to encourage eligible
voters to enrol or update their enrolment details in time f[...]personalised enrolment update packs will
be sent to all registered electors for them to check their
details. Electors only need to return the enclosed form if
any of their details need changing.

“Watch out for the update pack in your letterbox.
If you don’t rec[...]s are out of date. If this happens, you
will need to fill in a new enrolment form,” Mr Wicks said.

In addition to the elections website, enrolment
forms are available[...]ballot, only voters who are correctly listed on the updated
electoral rolls will receive voting packs in the mail and be
able to take part,” said Mr Wicks. “This means it’s[...]e who has changed address or other details checks to
make sure their enrolment details are correct.”

The last day for people to enrol or update their
details is 31 August. Voting papers will be sent to registered
electors from 21 September and will need to be returned by
midday on Saturday 13 October.

Massey[...]and’s high teenage pregnancy rate — purported to be
the second highest of all developed countries — Mas[...]research fellow Helen Wilson has debunked
some of the ‘myths’ about teenage motherhood in New
Zealand.

The first myth suggests the birthrate among
teenage girls is snowballing. In[...]ed since 1972. This decline,
which coincides with the introduction of the Domestic
Purposes Benefit in 1973, challenges the popular notion
that the DPB is responsible for encouraging teenagers to
choose motherhood.

Ms Wilson challenges the claim that unmarried
teenage mothers take up a di[...]rpose
beneficiaries, with an average duration on the DPB of
three and a half years for single parents.[...]n
granted a ‘Bright Futures’ scholarship from the
Foundation of Research, Science and Technology to
undertake her PD research with teenage mothers. H[...]es 12 years as a Plunket nurse and two
years with the YWCA’s Mothers Alone programme.

She says teenage pregnancy has been viewed as
problematic since the 1940’s, when it was seen as a
moral, then a med[...]as major
repercussions for young women struggling to raise their
children in a negative, or even hosti[...]son said.

“In fact, research does not bear out the negative
images that the media often portrays. And I wonder if it’s
being driven by the fact that middle—class white women
are having their babies much later. Is this now seen as
the norm, and everything else is a problem?”

Ms Wilson says links made in the media between
child abuse and teenage mothers are the most damaging,
particularly for young Maori mothers who are often the
targets of such negative claims. Although the literature
does show a relationship between young mothers and
poor parenting, these findings need to be interpreted with
caution.

According to writer and commentator Nigel Parton,
child abuse is far too complex a problem to isolate single
causal factors. He believes it is more appropriate to see
child abuse as a result of multiple interacting factors,
including the psychological traits of parents and children,
the family’s place in the larger social and economic
structure, and the balance of external supports and
stresses, both interpersonal and material.

Another myth is the suggestion that teenage motherhood
is a cause of educational underachievement.

According to Ms Wilson, studies have shown
pregnancy might be the result, rather than the cause, of
school failure and identifies pre—ex[...]t understand
that unless young mothers are helped to recognise their
own value, little progress can be made in influencing the
development of their children.

Ms Wilson’s PhD research aims to give voice to the
knowledge and experience of teenage mothers. Her[...]on’ research model involves
collaborations with the women — a joint exploration on
what enables them to mother well. Results will be
disseminated among t[...]y groups,
health professionals, policy makers and the media.

Design a new logo for lnternetNZ [[...]

Violinist Claire MacFarlane has been selected to represent New Zealand in the World
Youth Orchestra project to be held in September in Rome. 21—year—old Cla[...]rium of Music, says
she “absolutely thrilled” to have been chosen. The World Youth Orchestra is being
organised by Music[...]al for Young Musicians.
Performers will come form the conservatories and academies of all five continents. They
will perform three concerts at the Teatro Argentina in Rome.

Swim Coach’s Crocodi[...]scovered that, by releasing a live crocodile into the
pool, his students swim their laps faster. Discarding modern training techniques, Mr
Davies regularly uses the two—metre—long saltwater crocodile to chase his pupils. Its jaw is
taped together and its claws are clipped to prevent physical injury (psychological trauma
as yet unassessed). The Australian Institute of Sport has condemned Mr Davies’ methods
along with citizens concerned for the welfare of the crocodile, which is borrowed from a
local wildlif[...]relations conciliator Rajen Prasad, was formed by the
New Zealand polytechnics programmes committee after the polytechnic asked it to
investigate a string of complaints about the social services courses. This year, several
stude[...]after continued harassment from classmates
under the supervision of a complacent tutor.

Te Reo Maori Allocated $15 Million

Following the announcement of the new Méori television channel, grassroots Méori groups
are to receive $15m to help them propagate the language. Méori Affairs Minister Parekura
Horomia announced the funding, set aside by former minister Tau Henare more than two
years ago. The money is to be managed and invested by Te Taura Whiri I Te Reo, the
Méori Language Commission, with $2 million paid out each year to run small—scale
language projects. This proposal has come under fire from Méori caucus who object to Te
Taura Whiri’s “purist” approach to the language, saying that the money will most likely be
distributed to the same old groups.

Foot And Mouth Fights On

New cases of the devastating foot and mouth disease are still bein[...]Prime Minister Tony Blair announced on May 3 that the epidemic was on the “home
straight”, an announcement coinciding with the general election and certainly of false
pretences. Ministers are now resigning to the fact that they’re dealing with one of the
most stubborn agricultural diseases. Accusations[...]cattle and pigs are being slaughtered. Some blame the farmers, accusing them of being
complacent with s[...]procedures; in turn, British farmers are blaming the
spread on poor disinfecting by milk tankers, feed[...]g teams.

Winners of the 2001 Montana New Zealand Book Awards were announc[...]s biography of writer Janet Frame, Wrestling
with the Angel receiving the Montana Medal and $10,000. Lloyd Jones won the Deutz
Medal for fiction, a $15,000 prize for his novel about the 1905 All Blacks. Allen Curnow
won the poetry section with The Bells of Saint Babel ’5.

One year ago, New Zealand
was shocked by the brutal
murders of 38 year old Christine
Lundy and[...], and after a
depositions hearing he is
preparing to go to trial (the date
for which is being set this week).

Throughout the hearing the court was subjected to
particularly disturbing evidence.

Just after 5:30pm on the evening of the 29‘h August 2000,
Amber Lundy called her father to ask if she could have
McDonalds for tea. Amber and Christine went through the
drive—thru at 5:43 as stated on their Eftpos receipt. That
was the last time that 42 year old Mark Lundy would
speak to his family. The Crown says that Christine and
Amber died of severe head injuries at around 7: 15pm.

The murders themselves are shocking. Christine
died first after the attacker made his way into the bedroom
where she was lying naked in bed (she is normally a night
owl — reading Mills and Boon books or on the computer
until midnight), and killed her with a t[...]forensic
scientist Bjorn Sutherland said that in the master
bedroom where Christine lay, there was “[...]red and cast—off blood” which extended
across the bed, walls, ceiling and curtains. There were
clumps of brain tissue on the floors where it had met the
wall and dropped to the ground. Some of it had travelled
2.4 metres.

Chr[...]cial injuries — one
gash 8cm deep and others up to 12cm long. According to
Constable Jonathan Oram, the attack had left her ‘eyes
and top of her head n[...]Pang stated that she suffered seven major wounds to her
forehead and several other injuries such as a broken arm,
cuts and lacerations to her fingers and a broken ring on
her wedding fi[...]with self—
defence injuries’. Prosecutors say the attacker was
familiar with the house layout and intimate enough to get
to the edge of the bed without scaring her.

Christine was dead or near dead when Amber,
perhaps having heard the disturbance, left her teddy bear
in her bunk and crossed the hallway into the bedroom.
Having witnessed the event and turning to leave, Amber
was struck from behind when she was 70cm from the
floor, indicating she had perhaps tripped just b[...]and exposing brain matter.
Blood splattered down the hall, into her room and into the
spare room, at times up to 2.6 metres high. Blue and
orange paint fragments found on the bodies match the
same paint used by Lundy to mark his tools with.

One of the key witnesses in the trial, Margaret
Dance, a psychic who ‘deliberately shut out her powers’ to
give evidence, recalled that at around the time of the

murders she noticed what she thought to be a big blonde
woman with curly hair jogging dow[...]owards a dark blue car.

Mark Lundy’s alibi for the time of the murders
remains unwitnessed — he claims he was sitting on the
Petone foreshore reading. Later that night at just after 11 pm
Belinda, an escort from massage parlour The Quarry Inn’
arrived. Lundy paid her $140 for a[...]active sex life with his wife
Christine, but that the relationship was ‘generally good’ —
relativ[...]at he did not use escorts
regularly — perhaps 8 to 10 times in the last few years.

Lundy pointed out to Police that his movements
could be traced through two cell phone calls — one to his
colleague at 8:30pm and one to the Quarry Inn at 11:26 pm,
both sent through the Petone cell site.

Checking out of his motel at 8am the following
morning, Mark Lundy called Christine at[...]busy and would call back. After trying repeatedly to ring
back he eventually rang friends who went round to check on
her, only to find police had cordoned off the house. After
racing home in his dark blue Ford F airmont, Lundy was
stopped by police who took him to the station to tell him his
family was dead. Christine’s brother James Weggery had
found the bodies that morning and dialled 1 11.

Walking through the house for the first time after the
murders, it was heard that Lundy found it hard to compose
himself, dropping to the ground at times and sliding along
the hallway wall. He immediately noticed the jewellery box
was missing and that the catch on the window (which had
been forced open after the murders, as it had blood on it)
had been replaced. He did not enter Amber’s room. Upon
leaving the house he remarked to police that he was ‘so
pleased that the jewellery box (which has not been found)
had been[...]d suggested that it had been a bungled
burglary.

The Lundy’s were in considerable financial difficulty.
They owe $2.5 million to Winegrowers Ltd in Hawkes Bay,
$12,000 to credit card debts, $72,000 to their Karamea
Crescent mortgage, and another mortgage on the same
property. Two months before the murders Lundy says his
insurance representative advised him to increase the
couples’ cover from $205,000 to $1 million. Because of
Lundy’s bad blood pressu[...]diabetes and
cholesterol levels, it was increased to only $500,000.

At the deposition hearing the defence questioned the
fact that a suspect committed suicide around the time of the
funerals. However, out of 87 suspects it is Lundy who has
been committed to go to trial for the murders of his wife and
only child — the date of which will be set on Tuesday this

Associate Education Minister Steve Maharey said
the moratorium will apply to new private training
establishments (PTEs) seeking funding; it also
extends to applications by existing publicly funded
private providers to mount new qualifications or to
significantly alter qualification currently offered.
However, the restrictions will not apply to Training
Opportunities, Youth Training, Skill Enh[...]ts programmes administered
by Skill New Zealand.

The moratorium, which will last until the
2003 academic year was announced as the
government acts to shape tertiary education by
settling up a tertiary education commission to fund
and regulate private and state providers. Reducing
competition in the tertiary sector is a priority
project.

Mr Maharey said that following the announcement
of the establishment of a new Tertiary Education
Commission (TEC) to fund and regulate tertiary
providers it is time to signal the changes ahead for
the PTE sector.

“The government’s reform programme is
designed to improve the quality, relevance and cost
effectiveness of tertiary education. We have clearly
indicated to the PTE sector that the new system
under development will provide them with a clear
and distinctive complementary role to that played by
New Zealand’s 36 public providers,” Mr Maharey
explained.

Mr Maharey anticipates that the funding and
regulatory processes of the new TEC will incorporate
the country’s P’I‘Es as part of the integrated tertiary

present funding available to tertiary education was

Mr Hager, unassuming and[...]ost
recently, he featured in an episode dedicated to the
exploration of modern globalisation and contemporary
protest. Keeping his cool amongst the distracting antics of
joker—journalists Mikey Havoc and NewsBoy, Hager analysed
the fresh wave of violent protest in the Italian city of Genoa,
recent host to the 2001 G8 Summit.

Last Wednesday, Mr Hager attended lunchtime
environmental activities, listening to a drumming
performance from local drummer Brett G[...]up, but avoiding, a particularly purple shirt on the
clothes—swap table. Hager, a lunchtime Pied Piper, then led
the way to a lecture theatre of enthusiastic students.

Hager’s audience were, in fact, the subjects of his
lecture. Hager addressed a crowd[...]ians, media representatives, public spokespeople, the
country’s future scientists / decision—makers/ organisers and
the crucial participants to environmental causes. These
people are the fundamental ingredients for any successful
campaign, the dedicated few working for the majority of
sympathetic citizens unable to act upon their concerns. An
inspirational lot, they are the young generation of
environmentalists and conscie[...]they’re nicely noisy — an attribute essential tothe power of a well—planned
campaign, and how to use them to an advantage. He has,
so far, avoided the common predicament of the modern—day
conscientious objector, that is the build up of “a crusty
defence called cynicism” (Hager).

One of the things that propel people like Nicky
Hager to sacrifice a paid position and otherwise ‘normal’
lifestyle into the often dangerous front—line of environmental
activism, is the assumption that most New Zealanders have
a natura[...]evidenced in opinion
polls and surveys conducted to gauge emotional levels and
opinions.

People like Hager, and especially the environmental
groups formed at institutes such as Massey University, are
representing the masses. They are, in a sense, giving
citizens an outlet, an opportunity to confirm their support
through the signing of a submission or the wearing of a

Wellington last week to sign pledges to personally pull
up genetically engineered crops allowed by the
government.

Spokeswoman, Sarah Beesley, says the
support for the pledge is spreading fast through the
country. She expects thousands to sign up as a
consequence of the release of the Royal Commission
on Monday in which it was recommended that, for the
sake of New Zealand’s technological status and[...]ls.

“In three hours we signed up 78 members of
the public which is remarkable considering the level
of commitment we are asking for. Add that to the
hundreds of people who have already fought long a[...]ivists

campaign sticker. It must be assumed that the general
population cares just as much as the core few, the folk
Nicky Hager refers to as “the capitalists of the campaign”.

He explained to his knowledgable audience that
the proof is in the public reaction — if people care for a
cause, it will resonate.

Hager’s definition of protest includes the
opportunity to exhibit one’s passion, and consequently
incite emotion and confirmation from others, the public.
He stresses that protests inspire creativ[...]proper democratic leadership roles, and
must use the available media to their advantage.

Most importantly, the words must be spoken: a
campaign requires media—savvy spokespeople ready to
articulate the cause, be it on television, radio or inevitable
deaf ears. The power of persuasive rhetoric is not to be
undermined — many a doomed political campaig[...]David Lange’s awesome Anti—Nuclear
speech in the 1980s?)

In a convincing illustration of the power of
protest, Hager gave a brief outline of the West Coast anti—
logging campaign, one of Aotearoa’s most successful and
controversial public effort to protect its natural heritage.
Author of the revealing Secrets and Lies, a journalistic
exploration of the West Coast forest and its enemies,
Hager has been involved with the anti—logging campaign
since its infancy.

With regard to last week’s Royal Commission on
genetic engineering, Hager is expecting a serious reaction
to the recommendations of the commission. The quiet
faith of Nicky Hager and others like him, combined with
the rowdy efforts of energetic protestors, will undoubtedly
inspire others to act upon their one undeniable right — the
freedom of speech.

Modification

Last week, the Royal Commission on Genetic
Modification released their report on the future of genetic
engineering in New Zealand. The[...]s.

After fourteen months and 11,000 submissions,
the report came out in favour of genetic modification.

Retired chief justice Sir Thomas Eichelbaum
chaired the commission. They advised the government
that it would be “impractical” to keep genetically modified
organisms out of New Zealand.

Green Party Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons said the
report lacked long—term vision and leadership, and
focussed on what the Commission perceived as short—term
economic ben[...]pting genetic engineering instead
of dealing with the long—term risks.

“While the report recognises that the technology
is unpredictable and risky, the Commission then shows an
incredible faith in the technology, assuming that it will
eventually become safe” said Fitzsimons.

Pat Sullivan, Head of the Institute of Molecular
BioSciences, was pleased with the implications the report
had on genetic research at the university. “Credit
scientists with some sense. We don’t want to make the
place into a nightmare,” Professor Sullivan sai[...]irements of genetic research
currently overshadow the research itself. Massey has
between 80 and 90 gen[...]e updating every time a change occurs. “1
think the existing legislature costs Massey about $100,000
in administrative compliance a year.” He linked the
administrative complications to the unnecessary delays in
$200,000 to $300,000 in research contracts last year.

The Royal Commission’s report covered an
extensive[...]netic modification.

GE Protestors Take Concerns To Council

Preceding the release of Monday’s Royal GE
Commission Report, a crowd of about 50 protestors incited
motorists to toot and yell in support of a ‘GE Free New
Zeal[...]tudents, local environmentalists and
politicians, the group carried banners warning of the
danger posed by the release of genetically modified plants
and animals into the New Zealand environment. Several
painted their faces black in symbolic gesture, the paint
cracking with each grin at particularly ent[...]ck. Others stood resolutely, grim faces conveying
the seriousness of their protest.

Massey student and environmentalist Anna
McKnight spoke of the implications of genetically modified
organisms and of the overwhelming number of New
Zealanders who support the protection of this country’s
GE—Free position. Her comments incited confirmative
clamour from the protestors who shook their placards with
every co[...]or statistic.

Margaret McKenzie, Chairperson of the
Manawatu Greens and proprietor of the Terrace End
organic store, collected hundreds of signatures for a letter
expressing citizen concern about the unpredictability of
genetic modification.

“We[...]see New Zealand move toward
what it already knows to be safe and effective, that is the
growth of organic agriculture and environmentally
sustainable practice,” Ms McKenzie commented.

The protestors then took their message to the streets,
taking the long way around the Square to the Council
Chambers. Councillor Ian Crudin greeted the group,
accepting the letter from Green spokespeople.

To ensure that GE—free industries will not be
threatened by the introduction of genetically modified
organisms, the commission proposed to exclude genetically
modified crops from districts that have established GE—free
companies.

The commission also advocated the introduction of
an intermediate step between fie[...]release”
for genetically—modified organisms. The only options
currently available are either a total ban, contained trials or
released without control.

The Science Ministry would be in charge of
developing[...]liamentary commissioner on
biotechnology, similar to the parliamentary commissioner for
the environment.

Research funding would be increased to allow
support for organic and other sustainable agriculture, with
MAF tothe control and use of these new
technologies are of increasing importance. The report
recommends establishing Toi te Taiao: The Bioethics
Council, to consider cultural, spiritual and ethical issues.

These issues include the patenting of genes. In the
United States there has been a rush by large biotechnology
corporations to patent various gene sequences. The Royal
Commission recommends changing the patent laws so
human cells and processes can not[...]all
gene therapies, as well as ethical guidelines to be drawn up
for xeno—transplantation such as pig hearts into humans.

The Royal Commission’s report on Genetic
Modification will be discussed by parliament over the next
three months before giving its response.

__[...]ew Zealanders, he did not fully understand
all of the implications of genetic engineering but promised to
“consider carefully all that has been said”.

Other universities around the country organised similar
protests as the Royal Commission came to a close. At noon
on Friday July 27th Victoria University students from the
environmental group Ecoaction joined members of the
public at Parliament to call for a genetic engineering free
New Zealand.

The group presented a map containing several
thousand signatures to Green Party Co—President Jeanette
Fitzsimons demanding a GE free country. University
students gathered the signatures on a GE free tour during
their holiday period earlier this month.

The demonstration coincided with the reporting of
the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification. Ecoaction
highlighted the fact that 98% of the submissions to the
Commission were opposed to genetic engineering. This
sentiment was consistently expressed by the public
throughout their tour of the North Island of New Zealand.
“It was overwhelming the support the public gave towards a
GE free country,” said sp[...]“There
were considerable concerns already about the back door
entry of genetic engineering in our foo[...]esperson Ian Ewen—
Street MP last week welcomed the government’s response
to the select committee inquiry into organics, saying he
was pleased that ‘all of the committee’s recommendations
will be addressed b[...]initiatives’.

Mr Ewen—Street, who initiated the inquiry in the
Primary Production Select Committee, said he was pleased
the government had acknowledged that the organic sector
‘is an emerging industry with co[...]al for
further development’.

In its conclusion the report notes that: ‘Because
many in the sector believe that organics is incompatible
with genetic modification technology... there may be a need
to examine the relationships between this sector and these
sectors seeking to use this technology, in light of the Royal
Commission on
Genetic Modification.’

Sales of organic produce are set to grow from $5
million in 1996 to half a billion dollars in 2006 — or a
10,000 per cent increase in just 10 years. I am pleased
that the response to this report has recognised the huge
potential of the organics sector, especially the day after the
Royal Commission report which has the organics sector
very worried indeed,” said Mr Ewen—Street.

Mr Ewen—Street confirmed that the $100,000 the
Greens secured in the last budget would continue to be
used in the creation of national minimum standards set at
ver[...]lly say that genetic engineering is a
huge threat to organic agriculture and that, contrary to the
Royal Commission’s Views, the two systems cannot co—
exist,” he said.

The country’s organic farmers, in response to the
Royal Commission’s recommendations, have expressed
fears for their livelihood in light of the potential
contamination of their crops by modifi[...]rine Tait—
J amieson, shares these concerns — the organic status of
her dairy farm is threatened by[...]air—born
pollen, cross—pollination by bee or the spread of organisms
by human means. Consideration of the creation of a ‘buffer
zone’ between organic f[...]ave been ridiculed by agriculturalists,
who point to Britain’s foot and mouth disease disaster as a
poignant example of the unstoppable spread of certain
organisms.

Massey[...]ts and biologists from Massey
University welcomed the report from the Royal Commission
inquiry into genetic engineering saying it would open the
way for New Zealand to become more competitive With
Australia and other countries.

Molecular geneticist Professor Barry Scott says
the report is very positive from a research perspective. Its
recommendation to allow researchers to submit
applications on a project basis rather tha[...]research easier, faster and more cost
effective. The present HASNO Act imposed by ERMA has
placed many[...]upon academics like Professor
Scott.

Scott says the recommendation that researchers
wanting to conduct field trials undertake research into the
soil and ecosystems first is a step further than[...]tion goes and allows genetic engineering research to
proceed but in a much more cautionary way.

Propo[...]out studies into
ethical and cultural impacts of the release of genetically
modified organisms is a big step forward, as is the
establishment if an independent bioethics council[...]forum for debate, says Professor Scott.

He says the only disappointment he could see so
far in the recommendation was that they do no address the
need for education, for the public and especially teachers
specialising in this area.

“I believe to have critical debate on the issue we need to
resource high school teachers and educate the public
better than we have.”

Molecular biologist Professor Paula Jameson says
the loosening of regulations governing low risk resea[...]t us on level footing with Australia and
allow us to be more competitive at the low risk end of
research.

“I’m pleased to see they propose to allow field
trials to go ahead under controlled conditions. You can’t
see how a plant will react to UV, wind, rain or airborn
pathogens in a glasshouse. And we really do have to start
looking at the interaction between what is happening in the

Maori and English are the two official languages of Aotearoa. Have you eve[...]how little Maori language is around in comparison to English. The signs
around campus have both languages, it’s quite an accomplishment really, and something
to be proud of this University for.

Many people don’t see the point in encouraging the use of Maori, I believe that
we, as a society, have a responsibility to make sure that Maori doesn’t disappear.
Whateve[...]u hail from, if this country is what you consider to be
home, then Maori heritage and culture is a par[...]on at primary school
where I was fortunate enough to be in one of the first ever bi—lingual classes — The Whanau
class at Thorndon Primary School in Wellington. My reo is terrible now (I had to get a
HUGE amount of help with the opening paragraph!), and it makes me sad how much[...]rds that you can use in daily conversation. Sasa,
the Recreation and Leisure officer at MUSA, particularly likes the word Kaupapa, which
means plan. Often in meetings he’ll say “Okay, so what’s the kaupapa?” and it is a really
cool thing to be able to use more than one language in a single sentence.[...]mai!!!

Hostel Contracts...why they
need to change!

When you decided to live at the halls of
residence did you read you accommodation[...]om their contract if there is a circumstance
that the student believes to be valid. However it also
goes on to state that release from contracts is
unusual and most unlikely. Do you see the
contradiction? And what is a valid reason for
rel[...]ve
would be valid simply because it would be real to
me...how about you? But no, AFS believes that a
v[...]chologist) into why it would be
necessary for you to leave hostel accommodation...
But it doesn’t stop there! No, even if you have this
evidence AFS still has the final say, which is often
no!

What choice do we have now? If I’ve gone
through the correct processes and still been declined but I really want to leave the
hostels. The stress levels are raising and the grades are falling...gee, umm I’m so
unhappy I think I might withdraw from Massey and go home!

The University is therefore losing many students simply over hostel contracts. It
would seem beneficial to Students and the University if AFS were to provide more flexible
contracts in which we can give a specified period of notice before leaving the halls of
residence, much like real life eh? Furthermore, flexible contracts are more likely to keep
students enrolled in the University and also be more attractive to potential students who
wish to spend their first year living in the Halls.

Makes sense to me...how about you?

social last Sat which went really well. Thanks to

night!!! A nite of Samoan culture at the Social Hall.
It costs $10 but you do get a feed for free.

As most know by now, the International
Centre is officially called the International
Community Centre. We are still doing some work around the place and NEED
MORE HANDS!!!! It’s not just for the guys, if you like letting off stress by painting
then come round for an hour or so. The Centre will be formally opened in
September — NEXT MONTH!!!

MUSA Exec elections are on the 20—24 Aug (2 weeks’ time!!!). This is
where you vote for the PI Officer for 2002. Nominations were last week, so look at

Ok,[...]his weeks column there are
some things I’d like to talk about. If you want an EXAM remarked — ‘reconszderatzbn oft/28
scrlpl", as Massey likes to call it — you must apply (in writing) to the Manager of
Assessments on or before 10 August. Af[...]ing. Remember, although it costs $36 per
exam, if the reconsideration results in a passing grade, then this must be refunded by the
University. Also, keep in mind that, if the reassessment doesn’t result in the grade you
think you deserve, you can appeal the decision to Manager of Assessment and then to
Assistant Vice—chancellor Academic (Prof Graham[...]dn’t pass a paper, another thing you might like to consider is applying
for Carried Forward of Course Work. The University allows students who have passed
50% if the internal assessment, but failed the exam, to re—enrol in the paper at no extra
cost and to carry forward their internal marks. While this means that you won’t be able to
attend lectures, tutorials or do assignments, it does mean that you won’t have to pay for
the paper twice and do the same work again. To apply, grab a form from the reception in
the Registry Building, fill it out, and send it to Examinations Section. Unfortunately, the
application with cost you either $24 or $48 depen[...]late you leave your
application — you may like to do it as soon as possible.

Manawatahi’s Ski Trip to Turoa 2001—08—01 To the Manawatahi students and those
associated, the ski trip this year is Friday 17th to Sunday 19th August at Maungarongo
Marae in Ohakune. The cost of the trip is $20.00 (adults, includes students and
partners) 85 $10.00 (children under 12). Please pay your money to Juanita (our
administration person) who will give you a receipt upon payment and it also books your
seat on the bus. We anticipate at least 100 people on the trip so get in quick as it is a
first in first served basis, no payment no seat. The absolute last day for payment will be
the 15th of August, so if you decide that you don’t want to come and pull out at the last

Takataapui - The Ultimate Companion
Of the Same Sex

Kei te mihi ki a koutou, nga tangata o nga h[...]ori word and you may have seen it around.

Using the word Takataapui affirms my cultural identity, my Maori identity. Also
the diversity of my sexuality, because it was used by[...]rd that I
can use today and be proud of using and to stand up, especially to our Maori people, to
stand up and say that I have a right to use this word. It’s been in our whakapapa for
y[...]d by our tiipuna before colonisation and it means
the intimate companion of the same sex, and that was lost during colonisation
because the word Takataapui was related to what we now term homosexuality.
Rangikaheke was the first known case of the word being used. Rangikaheke was a
chief from sub-tribe Ngati Rangiwewehi, in the Rotorua area. He relayed the story of
Hinemoa and Tutanekai stating that Tutan[...]ly on with Hinemoa, but
also was a hoa-takataapui to Tiki as well.Tiki was the name of Tutanekai’s hoa-
Takataapui.

In today’s world we have used Takataapui to identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual
and trans—gender Maori. Takataapui is also the name of the new resource put out by
Hauora Takataapui — the Maori division of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation. It’s a funky

purpose?

Just to raise awareness especially to our Maori community, to whanau, hapu
and iwi, that it is okay to be gay and Maori. Also to young Maori gay people who are just

support groups and these are people that we normally wouldn’t be able to reach
because we didn’t where they were. You know a lot of young people come out, they
don’t know where to go, where to access information, where to get resources from
like condoms and lube, so it’s really good to have that out there so they know what
support gro[...]go.

show’s satire segment, with other days devoted to the show’s various
other segments.

Wednesday is spent in the Pit/calm studio filming links,
competitons, and g[...]ience of school children.
Smith acknowledges that the children are the key to the success of
PLZ/cana.

“We love seeing the kids faces when they walk in and see the
Pukana whare that they see on TV, it looks so dif[...]zed that they can actually sit down with and chat to the
presenters!”

It is this interaction that maintains the shows ‘naturalness’
and obvious appeal to younger viewers. It not only presents them with
familiar humour and values, but involves them in the process,
establishing a solid grounding in the development of te reo Maori
amongst an up and coming generation.

“We value our tamariki and their efforts to learn Maori, they
are our future leaders so we owe it to them to ensure we encourage and
provide good role models for them!” Smith says.

There’s no doubt that the PLZ/cana team are doing just that.
The team have come together from different areas of the country as well
as different areas of Maoridom and media experience, and have gelled
together effectively to create a positive and passionate avenue for young
New Zealanders to explore and develop their skills in te reo Maori.[...]ached by Hone Edwards with
whom he was working at the time, to work on a new Maori Language
children’s program[...]that I had been asked, so I thought I would make the bold move and
give it a go! The rest I suppose is history!”

Smith is joined by[...]senter on
ATN was also approached by Hone Edwards to audition for the show.
Morgan with her commitment to te reo Maori, her beauty, enthusiasm,
and committment to te reo, attended kohanga reo, kura kaupapa
Maori,[...]cy in te reo, Hoey insisted that she audition for the show.

Te Hamua Nikora, and Te Atirau Paki were b[...]his friend Potaka
Maipi who originally was going to audition for what he thought was a
current affair[...]Marae, Maipi knew
exactly who’d be perfect for the job!

A year later, working as a radio announc[...]he needed something new, and after going through the
audition process, is the newest —and tallest member of the PLZ/cana team,
after Quinton Hita’s departure at the end of the 2000 season.

Pukana produces about 46 shows per[...]coordinated by Paki, and is a regular
feature in the show, taking a look at the activities and interests of Maori
youth in the new milennium.

Maoritanga in the new milennium is a major component in the
kaupapa that drives PLZkamz. The other obvious factor is the language.
It’s distinction for many, comes from[...]non—speakers of te reo Maori.

For those taking the first steps in learning Maori, Pit/calla is a
va[...]entence structures in recognisable situations. At the same time, even
the most fluent speakers will enjoy its humour, and most of all, its
energy. Undoubtedly the energy of PLZ/cana, and the team who put it
together, embodies the direction of Maori television. Lively, upbeat, and
unafraid to be immersed in te reo. The use of te reo Maori in the
programme, is the acknowledgement that Maori Language is indeed the
backbone of our culture, and without any pretension, without any
aspirations to be anything else, PL'Z/cana says loudest of all, that’s its cool
to watch it, cool to be it, and cool to speak it.

“It’s been a real pleasure to see more and more of our people
become immersed i[...]a growing industry, Maori Broadcasting
what with the recent announcement of the channel is going to grow and
bloom over the next decade and certainly I feel Pal/cam: will still continue
to in many way’s make a valuable contribution towards the revitilisation
of the Maori Language.” Smith says.

Indeed, this is a growing industry in New Zealand, and the
success of PL'Z/cana not only reinforces t[...]

The group’s debut single “Kei a Wai Ra te Kupu” made it to
number fourteen in the New Zealand music charts, indeed an achievement
for a 100% te reo Maori single, and given the group’s exposure in more
mainstream media was slow to take off, is an accomplishment the group
can indeed be proud of. Coupled with the fact that the single has recently
gone platinum, we can be sure to hear more of them in the future.

Cool, calm, and collected, Hemi humbly accepts Chaff’s
congratulations.

“I’m just proud of the group, and everyone who helped — platinum
yeah,[...]n some time now since Hemi was selected as one of the five to be in
the group, so naturally he’s had some time to adjust, but isn’t shy in
acknowledging that lif[...]ed.

“It’s changed heaps. I can’t just walk to the supermarket anymore. I
hardly have free time to hang out with my friends.”

Most of the group’s time is spent in meetings, studio time,[...]formances, and although currently taking a break, the group are
building up to the release of their next single at the end of this month.

The production team from Cinco Cine travelled the country in
search of the talent that would form the new Maori group, and the
members of the group reflect this. Tomairangi with a background[...]ittle further north, from
Otaki, comes Te Rau — the only group member to still hold a job outside of
Aarl'a, Te Rau curren[...]kaupapa Maori in Otaki.

Hayden from Gisborne, is the “baby of the group” being the
youngest member, at nineteen years of age. Amomai, Hemi describes as
“the mother of the group” holding everything together. The
whanaungatanga, shines through Hemi’s words, as[...]with much aroha and respect. He also aknowledges the
suport of his own whanau, partcularly his mother.[...]i Waititi, where Hemi once
attended, with Amomai. The pair grew up together, from kura tuatahi right
up to today, they are as Hemi says, “still good mates[...]n
Auckland. They actually auditioned for Aaria at the same time after Hemi
heard about the auditions on Auckland’s Maz’FM

“I thought just for a laugh, I’d ring up, and Amomai was with me
at the time so I made her do it, and then, from there on[...]serious thing.”

All those who auditioned, had to perform a song in english, and

a song in te reo Maori. Then to show their proficincy in te reo Maori,
they were interviewed in te reo, coming face to face with judges
Quinton Hita, and Hori Ahipene. Even if a little star—struck at first,
Hemi impressed the judges enough to make it to the finals.

“Because of the group’s Maori language focus, the main thing
I think was that if you had te reo, then you had a good chance.”

For the final stages of selection, the last twelve spent a week
at a marae in Te Kuiti f[...]invloved dance lessons, and

singing. From there, the final five were chosen.

The group all have strong groundings in Kapa Haka. Ha[...]a for most of his life, and Amomai is
a member of the champion Maori culture group Waka Huia who have
t[...]and. It is this combined exeprience that
enhances the group’s performance and proficiency in te reo[...]both integral
components of tikanga Maori and of the kapapa of Aarl'a. The group
itself, its concept, development and success, form another link in the
chain which strengthens and reaffirms Maori cult[...]h a 100% te reo Maori single can climb as
high in the charts as Adria have when placed head to head with other
mainstream, and international act[...]ew kind of
exposure, that is well received across the nation, with ever—
strengthening enthusiasm, and with this success destined to continue,
there will be no shortage of positive young role models to ensure our
younger generations are in good hands. Hemi’s message from the
group sums it up best.

“What the group really aims to achieve, is letting young people
know, to do well at school — and if you really want some[...]ng into it, cause you can
achieve it. If that’s the goal you want, then go for it to the fullest.
Because that’s what we did. What we’re doing now is something that
we love to do and we’ve had the opportunity to take it, and use it.

I’m a long time reader and I re[...]ublication. However, I was very
disappointed with the television column on
C81. The column was boldly titled CSI and I
thought great[...]ing about how
cool CSI is and what a shame it was the
final last Monday. But only half of the
column was on CSI and it was basically
rubbishing it. The column compares it to LA
Law, which to be fair I have never seen; I
think mainly because I wasn’t alive in the
Jurassic period of television. CSI is a really
co[...]t which I found interesting (and I know
I’m not the only one). It does have in depth
storylines and l[...]racter
development. I think more people are going
to miss it than be glad it’s gone. I don’t
think CSI warranted the review it got, it is
America’s fastest growing[...]h I
think speaks for itself. Everyone is entitled
to their opinion, but I think a review should
also say what is good about the program
rather than just saying it’s crap.

weights and cardio room will be built at
the front of the Recreation Centre. Our
ability to be able to continually extend the
weights and cardio rooms over the years
has been largely due to the training room
levy.

In the last few years we have had
to pay aerobics instructors (in the past
instructors have taken classes for free) so
aerobics has become an expensive service
to run. As it is a popular activity and we
wish to at least maintain the service we
offer and because many aerobics
participants also use the weights and
cardio rooms it was decided to bring in the
one levy to cover both activities. We didn’t
feel it was fair that students who use both
the aerobics service and the training rooms
should pay extra.

The Recreation levy that students
pay as part of their MUSA levy not only
contributes to the running of the
Recreation Centres and grounds at Turitea
and Hokowhitu where students are free to
come and play badminton, squash,
basketball, volleyball, pool, table tennis,
rugby, soccer etc with only a minimal
charge for the hire of some equipment, but
is also used to support the over 100 clubs
on campus through the provision of a
Clubs Development Officer and Clu[...]USA affiliated clubs can
apply for twice a year. The Clubs
Development Officer also plays a role in
the campus community by running events
such as Evening Social Leagues, Crazy
Sports Day for the Halls students and
activities such as ‘Changing[...]nce, yoga,
photography, pottery, ski trips, trips to
Kapiti Is etc etc. The overall cost of the
programme is kept to a minimum by
subsidizing a number of classes.

We feel that for an extra $30 per
year to use the weights, cardio and
aerobics facilities that students get
extremely good value for money.
Compared to gyms in town our prices are
lower, are hours are longer and we have
one of the best facilities in town. Certainly
no one else offers the range of services and
facilities that we offer.[...]ist...

the university) is not enough to cover all the
facilities and services under the umbrella of

fact it only covers just over 50% of running

hearted and thought provoking look at the
issues facing university students and
indeed the whole of society, while

to their opinion I personally feel that

algebraic formulae would be a huge loss to
the quality content of this paper.

I would also like to say full marks to the
royal commission on GE for producing a
well—balanced report that looks above the
hype and hysteria present on both sides of
the argument and striving to create the
best outcome for this country. Sanity has

A Bunch of Stuff
Dear Chaff and Everyone

It may surprise some of you to know that a
thriving colony of felines exists right here
on campus. The really odd thing is that it
is composed entirely of kittens. There are
swarms of them. And they live within the
large circular bush—shrub—tree thing
behind the MUSA building.

It’s inevitable that smaller
collections of individuals will arise within
the larger habitat of the campus. Just as
birds will nest in the significant number of
trees, so it is conceivable that a colony of
cats will arise in the bushes.

What’s interesting is the young
nature of this group’s members. What has
happened to create some weird kind of
Lord oft/28 Flies—typ[...]yards? Perhaps a campaign of
genocide was mounted against the adult
cats by an unknown party, and these
kittens are the only survivors, being too
young to warrant attention. It might be
part of the ducks’ on—going struggle to
become the dominant species on this
campus. Is it time for humans and felines
to form an alliance against the avian
menace? Are we obligated by common
compassion to help the devastated
remnants of the kittens’ society? It is a
question that needs to be addressed soon.
I see that some of you have endeavoured to
help them. Be assured, the kittens
appreciate your kind efforts.

There’s a bunch of other stuff I’d
like to say about an American president
who isn’t Dubya[...]n?). Yup, George Bush Sr. is a Class A
gormo that the world forgot. He did some
pretty appalling shit,[...]ark. Unfortunately
I am not in full possession of the facts, so I
cannot comment credibly. Watch this

a discussion I started last year that never

Mladic, Milosevic and Karadzic prevented
adequate support being given to the
Dutch. Everyone got sold out by the top
levels of the UN.

competition was a ninja by the name of Oruku Nagi. They fought for the love of a

suicide, to keep from dishonoring his family, but Shen forced him to flee with her to
New York.

Yoshi was forced to take refuse beneath the streets of Manhattan. One day,
he and his pet rat came upon four baby turtles crawling in a strange ooze. The
mutagen immediately transformed the turtles and Yoshi into cross hybrid creatures
— their genes were combined with those of the last animals they had each come into
contact with. The turtles had most recently been with Yoshi, and he[...]s pet rat. Splinter became half rat, half man and the turtles
named him Splinter because of his ability to splinter foes easily.

Why the turtles bothered wearing masks was something of a[...]ly not a superhero or anything.’ Then there was
the question of companionship. These weren’t just m[...]satirical underground
comic exploded into one of the biggest merchandising booms ever. Their faces were
put onto anything big enough to hold them, from skateboards and pencil cases to
band—aids. Kids everywhere garbed themselves in[...]nts
involving homemade nunchakus. And, of course, the phrase ‘Cowabunga dude’
briefly became part of everyday language to the annoyance of parents and teachers
worldwide. Still, they could kick a Pokemon’s ass any day of the week.

and she loved it.[...]led over by her first taste of cinema especially the
fantasy films of George Melies. Her life long pa[...]work, which appeared on New Zealand
television in the early 1970s. These silhouette films were made for the BBC and American
TV in the 19503. You can see the strong influence that fairy tales have had in inspiring
Reiniger along with the traditional Chinese shadow plays of the 11th century.

factory. People no longer consider him boring. As you can imagine the scene is set for all

Johnny and Alice cut the roof off his Valiant and hit the South Island roads looking for

boots carrying some tabs of acid. The three find themselves having to keep ahead of those

A kick ass action film from Hong Kong. The plot may be difficult to follow but the visuals
more than make up for it. There are explosions, fights, gunplay and assassins. It’s not
hard to see where the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix) got some of their ideas.

Sunday August 1[...]a embarks
on a romance with an older Italian boy. The girls share a bedroom and Anais witnesses
everything. The film reveals the confusion, beauty and degradation of growing up and the
un—predictable climax will leave you breathless.

Wh[...]eople...okay, quite a lot of people, don’t like the
show, doesn’t mean they should spoil it for the
rest of us. Sure, teenagers are being played by
3[...]and Joey
and Jen and even Pacey, who is supposed to be
the least bright of the core characters, speak
with vocabularies that riv[...]chology textbooks —

e.g.

JOEY: I expected you to say good—bye.

PACEY: Right. The good—bye scene. I come to
you, heart in hand, and announce my plans.
You stare at me, pained. But then the Potter
sarcasm kicks in. And I walk off, never ge[...]r.

Once you get past all that (and you
can, with the help of the patented Dawson’s
Creek Drinking Game — we’ll try get it published
sometime — then the only thing you need to
worry about is the morning after) you’re left
with good, old fashi[...]ws. We
love seeing Dawson get all worked up about thethe phrase “big fat head”) when
he gets all self righteous and middle aged. Guys
loved the bit where Pacey shagged his English
teacher, and girls loved the bit where Joey,
daughter of a drug—dealer, had to choose
between fat—headed Dawson, or bad—boy Pacey.
And we all cringe with repulsion when the
camera zooms scarily close toThe only thing that’s
really missing is a creek.

V[...]agon is a martial arts movie of epic proportions. The movie
stars Chow Yun Fat who plays Li Mu Bai, a warrior of
considerable talent and possessor of the Green Destiny
sword. Mu Bai has decided to give up the warrior life and
asks his long time friend Yu Shu Lien, played by Michelle
Yeoh, to deliver his sword as a gift to Sir Te, a trusted and
respected official.

Thing[...]estiny is stolen
by a shadowy figure, this leads to a high flying pursuit
across the rooftops of 19‘h century Beijing. The chase ends
with an incredible fight between the agile thief and Shu Lien.
The action scenes in this movie are possibly the best I have
ever seen, and were coordinated by Yuen Wo—Ping who was
responsible for the gravity defying antics in The Matrix.

But the movie isn’t all fight. There’s plenty of
drama, romance and comedy to spare. But be warned,
Crouching Tiger has a very complex story line with plenty of
back story so it pays to keep close attention especially since
the film is in Mandarin. Yes! Mandarin. Yet the fact that the
movie is subtitled is not a hindrance, it’s a beautiful
language and it adds something mystical to the movie.
However, for the lazy viewers there is a dubbed version
available but I urge you to watch the subtitled version. It
really deserves to be seen in its original form. Plus the big
yellow subtitling makes it easy to read, its not a problem at
all.

Reviewing this m[...]finitely one of my favourite movies of all time. The action
is furious yet graceful, the story is deliciously melodramatic
and the strong female characters are definitely the highlight
of the movie. Watch it and you’ll see what I mean.

Gu[...]iso is a nastier and darker
Fawlty Towers, run by the duo from Bottom. It’s the
cheapest hotel in Britain, and probably the worst. Situated
on the edge of a precipice and next to a nuclear power
station, Paradiso is being run into the ground by Richie and
Eddie, who cheat the guests, steal their possessions, and
burn their u[...]s. But now they’ve hit an
unexpected crisis — the waiter’s gone back to his psychiatric
facility, Chef has had a terrible accident (well, been hit on
the head twenty—seven times with a frying pan), and all the
guests have left without paying. Even worse, they’ve
recovered their property from the safe.

Things brighten up with the arrival of the Nice family,
a pleasant couple with two adorable[...]rbonara, a mysterious Italian actress shows up
at the hotel, having just jilted her fiancee at the altar. The
situation starts tothe fish Eddie
just served for dinner turns out to have been slightly
contaminated by the nuclear power plant... In other words,
the house special glows in the dark.

Fans of Bottom and the Young Ones will know what
to expect from a film written and directed by Ade
Edmondson and Rik Mayall, also co—starring them in the
main roles. Rather unfairly, upon release in cine[...]st British comedy, there’s subtle
humour lacing the obvious slapstick, with that nice dark
sardonic edge that the Brits do so well. Mayall is at his best
playing a[...]mondson, with a quieter role, is
even funnier. Of thethe whores I
have ordered? Bring them to me, I take them now!”

If you want to see a quality movie that will enhance

For all you fans (and soon to be fans) you’d be
interested to know that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is
based upon the forth installment of a series of 5 novels by
Wang Dulu. Expect a prequel movie based on the 2nd and
3ml Episodes and possibly a sequel based on the 5m.

When I saw that the guy from American Pie was
starring in Evolution,[...]— that is, not actually very funny. When I
saw the shorts I changed my mind. Basically, what
happens is an asteroid crashes into the Arizona desert. It
turns out that the asteroid is carrying alien bacteria,
which voraci[...]erous lifeforms. It quickly becomes apparent
that the aliens threaten to engulf the United States within
a few short months, making humanity extinct. Without
spoiling the rest of the movie, David Duchovny saves the
day.

But no—one was ever going to go to Evolution for
the plot. People were going for the laughs. Which is a
shame, because there aren’t[...]can’t
understand why; Julianne Moore was going to show the
world that she could do comedy as well. The falling over
was her idea. This isn’t to say that Evolution isn’t funny,
just that it isn’t laugh a minute.

There is however a good side. All the aliens are
very cool looking. I especially liked the flying ones. When
the director transferred his talents from Ghostbusters, he
took the beautiful monsters with him. He even
remembered to bring the Marshmallow Man. In fact,
visually the whole movie looks good, and the special
effects are quality. David poses well over dead things,
Orlando makes it funny and the guy from American Pie
looks good in a fireman’[...], Evolution is a good movie for
a Saturday night. The plot’s not too taxing, and you’ll
walk out wi[...]Woods
Dir. A human being

At first glance (i.e. the shorts), this film looked
like Aliens meets Ghost, done like a swished—up ReBoot
with grey as the primary colour. I was expecting a very
familiar plot that allowed the makers to showcase the
pinnacle of computer—generated film—making.[...]for space opera, in other words. Something along
the lines of Titan AE but without a sense of humour.[...]r my predictive skills: space opera this
isn’t. The film is set on a devastated Earth in 2065.
Humanity has been overrun by aliens, the Phantoms, and
survives only in huge shielded cities. All efforts to destroy
the invaders have failed. Dr Aki Ross, recently rescued
from the wastelands by the elite Deep Eyes marines,
argues that humanity should seek the eight spirits that
will “cancel out” the Phantoms. Despicable military idiot
General Hein doesn’t have time for such mumbo—jumbo
and wants to blow stuff up with his big space cannon.

Let’s not kid ourselves here. This film is about
the animation, how good it is and what the makers can do
with it. Everything else is kind of[...]it’s all real, as promised?

Well, yes and no. The dream sequences with their
alien landscapes and creatures are stunning. Any scene
with one of the cool, insect—like dropships is edge—of—the—
seat stuff. The Deep Eyes are fantastic charging about in
the wastelands — “space marines” have never looked cooler.
And of course, the amount of effort they’ve put into
making Aki Ro[...]jaw—dropping.

Which, unfortunately, is part of the problem. So
much time is devoted to animating her character, everyone
else gets forgotten and they tend to look like extras from
Max Steel General Hein and the lesser Deep Eyes, Jane
and Vance, suffer from this particularly. While animation
has come a far since the days of Mickey Mouse, there’s
still a way to go before animated people move and talk as
convincingly as real ones.

Believe it or not, the movie has a plot behind all
the fancy effects (gaspl). It’s a pretty interestin[...]around Aki Ross and her Deep Eyes friends
racing to collect spirits from Phantom—infested places
be[...]l Hein and his lot are stereotyped and
derivative to the point of irritation. I wanted to itch every
time he spouted the usual stuff: “do what’s right,” blah,
“traitors,” blah, “keep firing!” and the classic “what have I

done?” Yawn. Couldn’t the writers find a more original
antagonist?

Tired plot elements and the outbreaks of animation
below the standards the film sets for itself aside, it’s the tone
of Final Fantasy that made it for me. The human race is
basically screwed, and thethe spiritual story
aspects — they left me feeling[...]ou should, simply because it marks a
watershed in the way we make movies. Like it or not, this
sort of thing is here to stay. It’s just a question of time
before you won’t be able to tell life from Life v2.0.

The National Anthem - i te reo Maori

It was a cold and wet Auckland night as the
throngs of Tool fans crowded outside the North Shore Events
Centre. The feeling was one of anticipation, but with a sense
of mystery: to use a cliche, you go to a Tool concert
expecting the unexpected.

About an hour and a half in the queue, I finally
made it inside. Despite rumours[...]t for a
support act, it eventuated that Tool were the sole
performers. The atmosphere was electric inside the building.
At 9pm, the house lights blinked off, and the circle of eyes
from Lateralus appeared on the two projection screens to a
huge roar from the audience.

Four shadowed figures made their way on to the
stage, then BAM! The opening notes of “The Grudge”
rumbled out of the massive PA. Tool had well and truly hit
New Zealand, and what a way to make their presence felt.

What followed was a truly incredible set, full of
power and dynamism. The band performed a wide—ranging
setlist, drawing[...]all night. I have never
seen a band that are able to reproduce their recorded
material so flawlessly[...]ool.
Danny Carey’s drumming was simply amazing; the floor
literally shook whenever he played his double—kicks, such as
in “fEnema” and the end of “Schism”. Between songs, he
played the beginning of Pink Floyd’s “Money” on his
el[...]magnificent; his solid yet melodic playing held the band
together, and the beginning of “Schism” was his moment in
the spotlight, so to speak. Guitarist Adam Jones’ playing
was excellent throughout; moving from the hard hitting riffs
of tracks such as “46+2” to the hypnotic close of
“Reflection”, an inspired way to close the first half. Vocalist
Maynard James Keenan was simply astonishing from
beginning to end.

He held the crowd’s attention, despite being a
rather low—profile performer (he was silhouetted by the video
projection screen behind him for the majority of the
performance. However his vocal delivery was perfect, soaring
above the elaborate rhythms of his band—mates. One of the
highlights of the evening was his scream in “Opiate” — how
do[...]vocal chords? Between songs, he
displayed some of the wry humour he is known for in
concerts. “As you[...]reativity
and thinking for yourself is concerned, the bad guys are
winning. So tonight, I want you all to take the Non—
Conformist Oath: think for yourself (unaware of the irony,

the crowd repeats him). Question authority (again, the
crowd dutifully repeats him). Never, ever repeat what
somebody else says (fewer people repeat him).”

The fascinating and often disturbing array of
images projected on to the two video screens (one dwarfing
the stage and another behind Keenan on his riser) fitted
perfectly with the music. In the intermission, the music
Video for “Schism” was played.

Highlights of the concert for me were the final
quartet of songs: “Parabol/Parabola”, the thunderous
“fEnema”, a truly epic version of “Opiate”, and the closing
number, the phenomenal “Lateralus”.

I was awestruck as the band left the stage; it was
somewhat difficult getting back to reality after witnessing
Tool live! As the masses filed out of the building, Maynard
James Keenan’s final words to the audience, before
“Lateralus”, echoed in my ears: “I want you all to
concentrate on this feeling. Whatever you’re fe[...]it may be good, or it may be bad. I want you all to
remember what you’re feeling at this moment, and take it
home with you, and over the next couple of weeks, I want
you to come back toto a nz house compilation”

There was nothing. Only pitch black accompanied by the rain

eyes focussed. As the VCR blinked away, Shady awoke to
find the power back on. She peeled herself from the mound
of flatmates on the couch and shuffled over to the window.

One by one each member of the house staggered over to the
window. The street was a hive of activity.

“What the hell’s going on?” Flynt asked, standing ankle deep
in the water outside.

recognised her immediately. The woman from the markets.

have a realistic chance of winning this year’s[...]match, and having
lost their first match 12—3 to the All Blacks, they were eager
to at least leave their shores with points on the board.

The standout for the Springboks was skipper
Bobby Skinstad, who scored[...]h underachieved in their
first match with regard to playing up to expectations against
the All Blacks. The Aussies stepped up to the plate, perhaps
a little to cocky, but were met by a more confident and
orga[...]ine.

Braam Van Straaten made a triumphant return to
the test team, and having kicked his last 48/ 52 attempts at
Pr[...]. It was a no—brainer
including Van Straatem in the team, after Percy
Montgomery, who had a shocker against the All Blacks a
fortnight ago, was replaced at fullback by Conrad J antjes. It
seems the need for a genuine goalkicker has come to
prominence recently, as even Butch James who kicked
admirably in the Super 12 was overlooked due to his lack of
big match experience.

After an exhausting season, the Massey Inline
Hockey Club (MIHC) can lay claim to several impressive
feats. This year saw us come f[...]ith no previous
history Lower North Island league to win the Senior B
division with no losses. Winning all 8 games.

The Titan’s team was boulsted by the presence of
some players with prior experience fr[...]experience and 70’s
humor (and 80’s haircut) to the blend, with “pretty boy”
Toan prancing around spending more time attempting to
attract the opposite sex than concentrating on the game,
and Jase who always trips over when no one[...]success wouldn’t have been so complete
without the stunning efforts of our afore mentioned resident[...]ge, this man defies logic and puts
weight behind the old adage that “age is no barrier”,
humbling the guys in our team young enough to be his kids!
And quite a few players in the opposition as well. With 17
goals in 7 games, we[...]s what makes
him tick at his age!

Toan, probably the best all round player on the
team, consistently shows his worth on the rink. With great
speed, stamina and endurance, he manages to conjure his
presence where help is required, both in the offence and
defensive plays. His diminutive stature usually allows him
to slip between the cracks, though unfortunately more often
than not, that leads to a frustrated opponent squashing the
dude!

Jason’s size of 6 foot and 220 pounds is a mere
terror to the opponents. With excellent puck handling skills
and tremendous speed, he easily penetrates the opponent’s
line of defense and scores goals unassisted. However, we
are more accustomed to the sight of him losing the puck in
the last dying moment by tripping over himself.

We have seen some excellent development in our
new players over the season. Of note our goalie Greg
McCardle, the man behind the action in the net. This year
has seen a marked improvement in Greg’s skill, coming from
nowhere to undoubtedly being the best goalie in the Senior
B. Greg not only plays a mean goal keeping[...]presents NZ in American football.

Karl Wagenaar, the biggest boy in the team (in
height), has started to become a solid defenseman on the
rink. With his ability to roof the puck on demand, he makes
the opposition goalie’s life a nightmare. His younger
brother, Blair, has certainly earned his spot on the number
1 line. He is now a potent forward, with e[...]ft.

Iain is a solid defenseman, and instrumental to
successful defensive play in our 2nd line. Considering what

the three powers collectively had a standout “give me the
ball when the game is on the line” kicker. Sure, New
Zealand has had Mehrts who has the higher percentages,
but seems to fade when it really matters (don’t need to
mention ‘95). Australia has had to do with fullback
Matthew Burke, who seemed to peak a year or two ago,
and now is playing at a m[...]is standards.
Andrew Walker had a couple of shots against theto
the plate with the Bledisloe on the line last year?

South Africa has undergone the most change in
the kicking departments, with Henry Honiball, Andre
J[...]ently
Montgomery and James putting their balls on the line.
Van Straatem seems the most legit, as he has big game
experience and the ability to kick under pressure.

It remains to be seen whether Van Straatem will
stick around long enough for the 2003 World Cup, he has
the talent but it’s down to the coach and Harry Viljoen
needs to string some success together to keep his job.

The All Blacks will need to step it up down in
Dunedin, as Australia will be hungry for a win away from
home, though history is against them having never beaten
the All Blacks down in Speightsland.

on the blindside, and bring in Chris Jack or Mark

With a center of gravity that seemingly exists BELOW the
floor this guy just does not fall over period! Once he’s in
position you need to take the scenic route to get between
him and the goal.

Finally from the social league we inherited
Cairns. A risky proposition to start with seeing he played
for the Wildcats! He certainly waylaid our fears and
showed he could keep up with the rest of the guys in every
aspect of the game.

The success of the club and Titans is owed to
many people for their effort and contribution. The
Legends Bar and the New Zealand Community Trusts were
kind enough to provide us with incredible financial

The New Zealand Warriors are possibly the most
inconsistent sports team in New Zealand sporting history
(along with the Hurricanes).

It’s a fact, and diehard fans will agree, they have the talent
to beat anyone on their day — though now it appears every
team can pull something special out of their arse for one
week in the NRL.

They start off red—hot in their ‘new’ beginning as
the New Zealand Warriors, beating last year’s champ[...]n, as well as defeating this year’s
favourites, the Paramatta Eels a fortnight ago.

What’s strange about the Warriors winning
against good quality sides (besides the obvious fact that
they actually won)? Well, we beat the Eels for a very good
win, but the Eels bounce back to ride the Cowboys out of
town courtesy of a 62—0 rout — who we lost to! The team
seems unable to string together any successive wins, and
convert good wins into good seasons.

The Warriors are almost exclusively Ericsson
Stadium[...]tory; this year’s highlight was a good win
over the Sydney City Roosters in Sydney.

The formerly J afa exclusive teamthe Warriors winning, would be to put
money on Norm Hewitt being the NPC’s leading try scorer
this year. The giant—killers cannot be relied upon as an
alternative source of income, simply because they lack the
intensity, concentration and drive to compete week in
week out in league’s toughest competition.

Stacey Jones, the maestro halfback, proved he
deserves the label of New Zealand’s Alfie Langer, as he
added a 5 out of 6 kicking effort to his ever—growing
arsenal, which already include[...]itional kicking
game and superior passing skills. The 25 year old was
instrumental in helping to set up the Warriors running
game, and his kicking was a key to getting in the ‘Dogbox’
of Canterbury’s half.

The Warriors seem to step up a gear when
confronted by an above—average team, a la Brisbane, but
then they capitulate against much weaker opposition.

They have a particularly[...]ive, Kevin Campion. There is
considerable size in the forward pack, led (in weight, not
talent), by Mark Tookey, who tips the scales at well over
120 kg.

With a strong win over the visiting (and 2nd placed)
Bulldogs, the Warriors kept their top eight hopes alive, but
it remains to be seen if they can string anything consistent
together to finish the season.

They have a tough six games left, with no certain
victories to be pencilled in — though that is never possible
when talking about the Warriors.

Clive and Piggy’s
Rugby Column

What a turn up for the books, the mighty Rams
pulling one out of the hat to beat the Linton army boys.
This was against predictions, with that “venerable” old
report[...]iscussion is social rugby and
its demise. This is to the detriment of not only playing
numbers within the university but also the falling away of
the social life that social rugby brought to the region.

Remember the days of teams such as the GC,
Cavaliers, the X—Men & the Tribe. As well as the characters
who made up these teams. Skinner, Soggy Snr (Aka Sandy),
Burger and the incomparable Freddy “The Emperor” Nixon.
The things these people and teams got up to cemented the
fact that social rugby was not only a game, but a way of life,
up until the 90’s.

Today this is sadly not the case, and this can be
attributed to a number of things, including
— changes to liquor licensing laws
— revamp of the way student loans are given (no bulk
payments)

— general laziness within the student body.

So to remedy this, we must as students, in
particular the rugby committees within the club, must
initiate programs to ensure that this important lifeblood of
the club is kept at current levels and eventually raised. This
includes help with management as the majority of the people
involved with the teams have heaps of enthusiasm but no
idea in terms of administration and organisation.

Secondly the club must involve all teams in the
decision making processes even if it is a letter telling them
what is going on and if they have any ideas to come forward
at the relevant meetings. Finally people on the committee
must realise that although the A, Colts 85 K’s are the
flagships for the club, the people that get the sponsors on
board are the people that buy the product and it’s the
Massey Rugby Club’s (that is the social teams). So
remember to look after them and they will look after you.

Be[...]we have a few observations about
rugby in general to make.

We would like to thank all those lovely young girls who
turned up for the nude cheerleading tryouts, hard luck to
those who missed out, including Michael Pettman! Now
there have been rumours on the national rugby scene that
Buck Shelford should be the ABS coach, maybe he should
first do an apprenticeship coaching a team like the FILTH,
now that would be a challenge! This side struggles to put a
team on the paddock, let alone score any tries.

The L’s team would like to congratulate Glen
Mullany on a magnificent refereeing display on Wednesday,
Piggy controlled the game well and kept up with the play
surprisingly well. Good job mate, make sure you keep it up.

Congratulations to the varsity sides who made the
finals, go hard boys, do yourself proud! Lastly we would like
to give a big WORD to COB who have made the final for the
first time since 1990. For a club struggling for players, they
play every game as if it’s their last, maybe they could teach
us Varsity boys a thing or two about ticker!
